Contemplate Fruition

I painted two new abstracts on recycled cardboard last night. I've been packing up a lot of my artwork and collected art to get ready for the move. I'll be officially moving to my new home tomorrow. I wish I were a bit more excited. I'm as excited as I can be. Yesterday also happened to be the day that I finally told the singer of my band that I am done with playing nothing but cover songs (other band's/group's songs). The whole thing was turning into a hectic experience for me. When we first started, we learned about twelve songs and practiced them a good dozen times. Then, we learned ten more songs and practiced those a dozen times each. Our singer had told me that we could get by with playing 22-25 songs but then he changed his mind and decided that we "needed" to add 10 more songs to our set-list. Then, when I spoke to him after our gig last Saturday he said that the manager of the club told him that he didn't like the fact that some of the songs we played scared away some of the customers (there wasn't that many people there to begin with). So, our singer took to heart what this "manager" said and then decided that we "needed" to learn 20-30 more songs in order to appease the stupid public/venue/crowd/masses. It would not have bothered me so much if we had a decent amount of time to learn and practice the new songs but our singer was feeling a crap load of pressure from the drummer and bassist to constantly book more gigs. So, he naturally transferred some of that pressure onto me. I don't think he did it intentionally but nonetheless he did. I just want to get back to writing/recording the original songs that the singer and I were working on. I see no point in delaying the recording of our demo for the sake of pleasing a bunch of drunk people at a bar/club. There are more than enough cover bands that do that already and have been doing so far longer than we have. I'm not interested in winning the "respect" of a crowd of extroverted, wanna-be bohemian, non-thinkers! And I mean that with as much love as possible. :-)

End Of Week Of Creativity (?)

My "Week of Creativity" has come to a quick end. I was secluded in a relative's apartment for the past week. I must admit that I actually enjoyed it. Mostly because I was able to have tons more room to spread out my painting supplies and really get quite involved with my canvas. I painted 6 new abstracts and drew up sketches for at least a dozen new ideas/concepts. There was some procrastination on my part but mostly because I became captivated by the great shows on HBO. Now I am back at my regular residence and wanting to have a whole month of creativity! Perhaps a whole year! That sounds very appealing to me right now. I feel as though I need to move to France, Italy, Spain or even Holland. Or at least somewhere that is equally appealing. Somewhere that is FULL of inspiration! I'd even settle for some cabin in a vast forest/mountainous region. I do know that eventually I will come upon such a place. It's just a matter of keeping the vision of it in my head.

I haven't taken pictures of my new abstracts yet but will do so tonight and post them tomorrow. For now, here's a pic of a still life sketch. It was done with oil pastels on copier paper. It turned out slightly askew but I think it adds a little more to it.

You Can Take My Anger

I finally got around to painting some new abstracts last night. The first one is titled "Stuck In Your Ways" and has a very calming effect to it. I also added some pencil shavings to it for texture. The second one is titled "Take My Anger" and has a very noticeable vibe of frustration and/or anger. I added a piece of tissue paper to it in an effort to make it stand out out a bit more. Both pieces were done with acrylics on a recycled cardboard box. I also mixed in some triple thick glaze. I actually spilled a little paint on myself and one of my favorite blankets while painting these. It's all for the sake of art. :-)

Digital Abstract

I decided to fool around a bit with a basic paint program on my laptop. So far, the three digital abstracts I created look pretty interesting. Of course, digital art does not compare to a real painting but it can be a useful tool/resource. I might just recreate these on real canvas.

Four Acrylic Abstracts

 Here are four new acrylic abstract paintings I created last night. I was feeling rather inspired and just wanted to experiment with different textures. They all measure 9 inches by 12 inches and are on smooth Bristol board. I particularly like the last two I did because I managed to incorporate pencil shavings, tissue paper and bits of play-doh. I'd like to get my hands on some really huge canvases so that I can try the same technique on a larger scale.
