Painted this last night. It is done in acrylics on cardboard. I titled it Hypethial. It is a word I made up but it is just another word for open-minded open-ness.

Lately, I've been painting on a whim. Just allowing my subconscious to have more control over the brush. So far there have been a lot of interesting things showing up on the canvas. I don't know exactly where my subconscious is taking me but that is what makes the whole process enjoyable! Here are three recent paintings that poured out of my subconscious. All were created with acrylics on Strathmore acrylic paper. They measure 9 inches by 12 inches.

Order, Disorder

 I created these two pieces last night while watching the black and white film "Julius Caesar." I used permanent markers, clear tape and two torn pieces of lined paper. I also chose a discarded cereal box as my canvas. Both pieces are similar in shape and color and do adhere to a certain theme. The only idea I had in mind while creating them was an image of two different shapes and colors. I titled the first one "Social Order" and the second one "Social Disorder." Why did I choose those titles? I suppose since I was watching the blatant murder of Julius Caesar it got me thinking about how quickly great leaders and tyrants can fall from their pedestal. It doesn't take much and when they do fall they fall very hard.

Digital Abstract

I decided to fool around a bit with a basic paint program on my laptop. So far, the three digital abstracts I created look pretty interesting. Of course, digital art does not compare to a real painting but it can be a useful tool/resource. I might just recreate these on real canvas.

More Color Schemes

 I quickly drew/sketched out these four color schemes. I think I prefer to call them color sketches more than color schemes. Of course, they can also be thought of as abstract color sketches. Well, these color sketches are my way of exploring each color's dynamic. Sometimes I'll get an image in my mind of two or three different colors mixing/overlapping each other. And usually, if I allow myself to think about them long enough, I can feel what kind of energy/emotion those colors would invoke.

Here are the four color sketches. They don't have individual titles. I just titled them "Scheme, Scheme II, Scheme III, Scheme IV." I used pastels on copier paper.

Minimalist

 I've been busy learning a ton of songs in preparation for my band's busy spring schedule. It seems like a lot to take on all at once but the songs are relatively easy to play on guitar. Me and the singer got to practice yesterday with a drummer and bassist. The drummer was kind of lagging behind but there weren't too many mess-ups. Anyways, here are two minimalist drawings I did yesterday. The first is titled "Down-Trodden" and the second is "We Can." They consist of very simple shapes and colors but that is what makes minimalism so engaging. I didn't really have any kind of theme or concept in mind when I drew them but their titles came to me quite effortlessly. I believe it was due to a recent book I read in which the main character is having a hard time believing in his own existence. Well, that is my own analysis of it. The book is "The Invisible Man" by H.G. Wells. It is a really great story! Check it out at your local library if you are able to.

The Unity of Colors

 I am fascinated by colors! The way they can compliment and contrast each other at the same time is quite perplexing. Perplexing in a good way. I believe everyone should experiment with color schemes at some point in their life! The amount of color in your life does indeed affect your daily mood. There have been numerous studies done which prove how each color can drastically alter a person's mood. I could probably babble on and on about color analysis. Maybe I will save that for a future post. For now, here are two color experiments I roughly sketched out. I used oil pastels on Bristol board. The first is titled "Actually" and the second is "So Much." Both measure 9 inches by 12 inches.

Art is life and Life is art. :-)

Apple Wine

 There are many artists who have depicted various types of fruit with wine bottles. I figured I'd try it out. This is a drawing done with permanent markers and watercolor markers on smooth Bristol board; it measures 9 inches by 12 inches. It is titled "Apple Wine."

Era

 I created this abstract concept last night. I used pastels and an empty diet coke box. I'm not sure about its measurement but it is about 11 inches by 15.5 inches. It did take a good 2-3 hours to complete it. I like the way the colors sit so close together. I don't know if I will put it up for sale yet. I might just admire it for a few more days. I will definitely create some (smaller) similar pieces. I have titled this "Era."

 

Pastels On Fish Box

 Here are 4 new pastel pieces I just created. I used oil pastels and an empty fish fillet box. I was surprised how bright the pastels look on the cardboard. The only thing I don't like about pastels is how easily they rub off on your fingers. But I usually expect to get a little messy when it comes to creating art. :-)
